A day after losing its top reserve Will Yeguete indefinitely, Florida's basketball team must figure out a way to keep its promising season going.
The 12th-ranked Gators (22-6, 10-3) defeated Auburn 63-47 Tuesday night, but lost Yeguete to a broken left foot. The sophomore is expected to miss the rest of the season.
The 6-foot-7 Yeguete played multiple roles for UF, all of great value. He served as Florida's most versatile defender, it's top man in the press and as one of its best rebounders.

Texas TE Smythe lands Florida offer

Despite his ties to the Lone Star State, as a result of his tenure as the defensive coordinator at the University of Texas from 2008-10, Florida coach Will Muschamp hasn't pressed the issue too much as it relates to recruiting the region now that he is running the show in Gainesville.

When the Gators have extended an offer to a prospect to Texas, typically there has been a smart reason. In the case of Belton, Texas, tight end Durham Smythe, it appears that UF's coaches simply figure the kid was too perfect of a fit not to offer.

With the score tied at six and the bases loaded, senior Preston Tucker stepped up to the plate two RBIs away from tying the school record of 214.

Tucker didn’t reach 214, but he did ensure an 8-6 Gators' victory against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (2-2) with his sinking RBI single into right field scoring fellow senior Daniel Pigott to put the Gators up by one run.

Until the eighth, Tucker wasn’t the same player who leads the Gators in batting average, RBI and slugging percentage. In his previous four at-bats, the slugger found a Wildcats’ glove every time.

Will Yeguete’s broken foot most serious of Gators’ many injuries

Guard Casey Prather will be playing some power forward with Will Yeguete out indefinitely. (Photo by Kim Klement, US Presswire) Billy Donovan ticked off the list of injuries to his team on Tuesday night before getting to the one that would hurt Florida the most. Scottie Wilbekin is hurt. Same with Cody Larson and Casey Prather. Patric Young is also banged up. At that point, following the Gators’ win over Auburn, Donovan did not yet know the status of the most serious injury. He learned soon after, as Florida confirmed that Will Yeguete suffered a broken left foot in the win. On its own, that’s a tough blow for a team three games away from postseason play. Donovan said then that if Yeguete’s foot were broken, he would likely be out for the season. While Florida’s official stance is to say he’s out indefinitely, it would be surprising if he could return this year. What does that mean for the Gators and their frontcourt? The players that will have to take on bigger roles will need to get healthy, and quickly. Most of Yeguete’s potential replacements played Tuesday with some injuries. Scottie Wilbekin, one of the team’s top reserve guards, played 10 minutes on a hyperextended knee. Prather missed part of shootaround because of a sprained ankle but played six minutes. Larson has a bursa sack on his knee and played with a sleeve on it. If that weren’t enough, starting center Patric Young has a deep thigh bruise and a mild ankle sprain. Undoubtedly, he’ll share some of the load – both in rebounds and energy – with Yeguete out. Starter Bradley Beal was the only potential replacement for Yeguete who was healthy on Tuesday. “We’ve got some health issues that we need to get back healthier than we are right now, but it’s nothing major,” said Donovan. “Will’s would be major because if it is broken, I would say that he’s done for the year.” Boynton, Walker move up record lists Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker entered the game with a chance to continue to climb up some UF career records lists. Boynton, in particular, had a big night. He finished with a game-high 20 points, hitting 6-fo-9 3-point attempts. The six made 3-pointers moved him into fifth all-time in school history, giving him 246 to pass Greg Stolt’s 243. It also gave him 95 this season, moving him into fifth on the single-season list and passing Anthony Roberson’s 94. Walker, meanwhile, scored 13 to tie Stacey Poole for fourth all-time on the scoring list with 1,678 points. He went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, moving him into eighth with 522 FT attempts. “It means something to me. That’s a special list to be on,” said Boynton. “But it’s still a long season.” Donovan delivers blistering halftime speech As would be expected following a first half that included 12 turnovers and allowing Auburn to knock down 3-pointers (5-of-10), Donovan delivered a halftime speech that none of his players would repeat. Said Walker, “Pretty bad. …. Nope. I wouldn’t want my kid around.” He did clarify – Walker doesn’t actually have kids. But Donovan’s language certainly wasn’t suited for the PG crowd. After the game, he elaborated on what he told the players during the break.

UF’s Will Yeguete fractures left foot

Billy Donovan’s inspired speech to his team at halftime helped Florida knock off Auburn 63-47 on Tuesday night, but the Gators may have suffered a big loss during the game.

Sophomore power forward Will Yeguete, playing in his second game since suffering a concussion against Tennessee a week and a half ago, came down awkwardly on his left foot during the second half. He left the game to get X-rays and Florida's University Athletic Administration confirmed he sustained a fracture in his left foot.
